Brooklyn councilman pushes to ban creation of new hookah bars

City Councilman Vincent Gentile (D-Brooklyn) announced his plan this week to extend hookah bars to the New York City Smoke Free Air Act. The use of tobacco-based shisha, the herbal substance smoked through the water pipes, are already illegal by the ban, but Gentile wants to stop the creation of new hookah bars by 2012.

Nabil Badr, owner of 1001 Nights in Staten Island, said he didn’t know why the councilman was pushing the ban. He said that hookah is a relaxing hobby.
